Our Team
-

Mark Chandy
Principal Investigator
My research employs molecular biology to understand the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC)-derived tissue. Advances in next generation sequencing (NGS), proteomics, and gene editing have made it possible to decipher the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease.
-

Aleks Leligdowicz
Principal Investigator
My research focuses on studying samples from patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with acute infection to understand how heterogeneity in the immune response and endothelial injury contribute to patient outcomes. The goal of my research is to improve our understanding of sepsis pathobiology and identify treatable biological traits.
-

Kerry-Ann Nakrieko
C3RP Lab Manager
I provide technical and other support to students, help manage the laboratory, perform and summarize experiments, and receive and process clinical research samples. My prior research has investigated protein trafficking and dermatological health using cell biology and molecular biology techniques.
-

Grace Adetunde
Clinical trial recruitment
I am an MSc graduate of microbiology and have a postgraduate diploma in the clinical trial management. I focus on understanding disease mechanisms using iPSC-disease modelling to identify new biomarkers and treatments for cardiovascular disease.
-

Poorna MR
Postdoctoral Associate
I am a PhD Graduate in Life Sciences from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University. My PhD work used human iPSC-derived hepatocytes as an in vitro drug toxicity screening platform. I investigate the effects of environmental risk factors on the cardiovascular system.
-

Amena Aktar
Postdoctoral Associate
I lead the Induced PluRipOtent stem cell for MOdeling of life-ThrEatening infection (iPRPMOTE) project. By generating macrophages from iPSCs derived from sepsis patients and performing functional assays, I characterize macrophage function during critical illness.
-

Victoria Labuda
MSc Student
I am a master's student in Microbiology and Immunology. I am passionate about translational biology and understanding how dysregulated immune responses contribute to the pathogenesis of disease.
-

Frances Sutherland
MSc Student
I am a Master's student in the department of Biochemistry. In my research I use human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cells integrated into 3D microfluidic devices to investigate human vascular pathologies.
-

Cait Giannis
MSc Student
I am a master's student in Physiology and Pharmacology interested in environmental cardiology. With the C3RP lab, I am examining the effect of cannabis use on cardiovascular health in HIV+ patients.
-

Hanna Kusznirewicz
MSc student
I am a Microbiology & Immunology MSc student. I am investigating induced pluripotent stem cell-derived macrophages through the lens of sepsis and critical illness.
-

Logan Van Nynatten
Critical Care Medicine Scholar
As a clinical scholar in critical care medicine, my research interests include biomarker development, proteomics and molecular imaging. With the C3RP laboratory, I am characterizing the biology of venous congestion in critical illness.
-

Nicole Latman
MSc student
I am an MSc student, and my research interests focus on the role of macrophages in driving endothelial dysfunction during critical illness.
-

Ayana De Silva
MSc Student
As a master’s student in the C3RP Lab, I study immune tolerance states in critical illness and am deeply interested in how these immune states may shape patient recovery and outcomes.
-

Maria Grigorescu
SRTP Student
I am a second-year medical student at the Schulich School of Medicine. My research focuses on genetic predictors of sepsis risk.
-

Josephine Liu
SRTP Student
I am a third-year medical student at the Schulich School of Medicine. I completed my Bachelor of Health Sciences at Queen’s University, focusing on antibiotic resistance mechanisms. After experiencing septic shock myself, I was inspired to understand sepsis pathophysiology. My research focuses on immune responses in early sepsis.
-

Jonathan Moroniti
SRTP Student
I am a fourth-year medical student at the Schulich School of Medicine. I completed undergraduate and Master’s degrees at McMaster in Biomedical Discovery and Commercialization and worked for the Health Economics and Outcomes Research group of a pharmaceutical company. In the lab, I use iPSCs to understand endothelial injury during sepsis.
-

William Myers
Undergraduate student
I am Scholar’s Elective undergraduate student in Medical Sciences at Western University. My research focuses on the effects of critical illness on neurocognition. I am excited to apply my research experience to real-world clinical challenges to improve patient outcomes in critical care settings.
-

Soumit Sahoo
Undergraduate student
I am a fouth-year Honours Specialization Rehabilitation Sciences student at Western University. My research interests are neurocognition in the critically ill, and I am eager to apply my knowledge of the impact of severe illnesses in my future career. I aspire to become a Neurologist.
